SENATOR BOURNE: At what time was it that this word came? How long after the ship struck?
MR. COLLINS: Well, it was exactly—I am sure—half an hour, sir. Quite half an hour, it was.
SENATOR BOURNE: Go on.
MR. COLLINS: We went up to the deck when the word came. Then I met a companion of mine, a steward, and I asked him what number my boat was, and he said No. 16; so I went up to No. 16 boat, and I seen sailors with their bags ready for No. 16 boat. I said to myself, "There is no chance there," and I ran back to the deck, ran to the port side on the saloon deck with another steward and a woman and two children, and the steward had one of the children in his arms and the woman was crying. I took the child off of the woman and made for one of the boats. Then the word came around from the starboard side there was a collapsible boat getting launched on the starboard side and that all women and children were to make for it. So me and another steward and the two children and the woman came around on that side, the starboard side, and when we got around there we saw then that it was forward. We saw the collapsible boat taken of of the saloon deck, and then the sailors and the firemen that were forward seen the ship's bow in the water and seen that she was intending to sink her bow, and they shouted out for all [that] we were to go aft, and the word came there was a boat getting launched, so we were to go aft, and we were just turning around and making for the stern end when the wave washed us off the deck—washed us clear of it—and the child was washed out of my arms; and the wreckage and the people that was around me, they kept me down for at least two or three minutes under the water.
SENATOR BOURNE: Two or three minutes?
MR. COLLINS: Yes; I am sure.
SENATOR BOURNE: Were you unconscious?
MR. COLLINS: No; not at all. It did not affect me much, the salt water.
SENATOR BOURNE: But you were under the water. You can not stay under the water two or three minutes, can you?

Je me suis dit : « Il n’y a aucune chance là-bas », et j’ai couru jusqu’au pont, j’ai couru vers le côté bâbord du pont du salon avec un autre steward et une femme et deux enfants, et le steward avait un des enfants dans ses bras et la femme pleurait. J’ai enlevé l’enfant de la femme et mis dans un canot. Puis on a entendu dire que du côté tribord, un canot pliable était mis à l’eau du côté tribord et que toutes les femmes et tous les enfants devaient le prendre. Alors moi et un autre steward et les deux enfants et la femme sont venus autour de ce côté, le côté tribord, et quand nous sommes arrivés là nous avons vu alors que c’était vers l’avant. Nous avons vu le canot démontable du pont des embarcations, et puis les marins et les chauffeurs qui étaient en avant ont vu la proue du navire dans l’eau et ont vu qu’il allait couler par l’avant, et ils ont crié pour tous [que] nous devions aller à l’arrière, et on nous a dit qu’il y avait un canot qui était mis à l’eau, alors nous devions aller à l’arrière, et nous nous tournions vers l’arrière et nous nous dirigions vers l’arrière lorsque la vague nous a emportés du pont — nous a balayés — et l’enfant a été emporté de mes bras; et les débris et les gens qui étaient autour de moi, restés sous l’eau pendant au moins deux ou trois minutes.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Deux ou trois minutes?
M. COLLINS : Oui, j’en suis sûr.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Étiez-vous inconscient?
M. COLLINS : Non, pas du tout. Cela ne m’a pas beaucoup touché, l’eau salée.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Mais vous étiez sous l’eau. Vous ne pouvez pas rester sous l’eau deux ou trois minutes, n’est-ce pas?
